The Perils of Stretching

You might think yoga is all about stretching.

Well, I disagree and I’m feeling ranty about it!

The older I get, the more suspicious I am of stretching.

All the long-term yoga related injuries I have are from over-stretching.

Right now I have issues in my right hamstring; I’ve previously had knee problems and neck problems. All caused by repetitive or over-stretching.

Now I’m being provocative here.

Yoga is fantastic for improving your flexibility, and a certain amount of stretching is useful.

But don’t worry, just doing all your regular yoga poses is already going to help you get more mobile and flexible.

HOWEVER getting obsessed with stretching further all the time isn’t helpful.

More flexibility requires more strength to support your structure safely.

So if you are naturally flexible…

…don’t push it in stretches because you don’t want to get too hyper-flexy… instead focus on building strength to support your joints better.

Or if you are naturally stiff…

…don’t push it in stretches because getting into a fight with your own tissues isn’t yoga… don’t worry it will come… instead focus on learning to release the tension you are holding.

You won’t get this kind of insight and guidance if you are only doing YouTubes or self-practice at home.

That’s why we offer ten opportunities to practice yoga with us live on Zoom throughout the week, and six in-person classes:

👍 Three daytime classes mid-mornings on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
👍 Seven evening classes Monday – Thursdays
👍 A later session at 7.30pm on Thursdays
👍 In-person options in Bangor, Holyhead, Aberffraw and Valley
👍 AND… loads of recorded sessions of varying length so you can get your yoga in whenever you want

My top tip….. right now there aren’t that many people coming to the daytime classes, so they’re an excellent chance to get a lot of support with starting or building your yoga practice.

The best way to access this is through our“All the Yogas” monthly membership.

We’ve created this container over the last two years of chaos, to help people keep strong, supple and sane, whatever the post-Covid era brings.

This is for you if you want flexible support in committing to a regular practice in order to improve your physical and mental health through yoga.

It’s not for you if you’re after super-advanced yoga, we aim to teach classes that are safe and accessible for beginners and improvers. Also if you’re not able to commit, we do a “drop in” option for classes as well.

You get to chose what you pay per month in the “All the Yogas” membership – we appreciate the Covid-19 era has been challenging for many and has widened the inequality in our world:
👍 ORANGE rate – £49 a month – the “I feel generous” rate
👍 GREEN rate – £29 a month – the “regular” rate
👍 PINK rate – £9 a month – the “not working/financially stressed out by Covid” rate

And for that you can come to as many classes with us as you want each month!!

Taking steps to support your health is vitally important. It’s not something to put off until next year or “when the time is right” or “when I’m less busy”.

Sign up here and I’ll send you a link to book in for a short chat with me about your yoga goals.
